Ready for your new hearing aid? The exciting and nervous feeling you may have is normal. Will your hearing be the same? Will your hearing aid be comfortable? These are all questions to keep in mind when you are being fitted for your new hearing aid and on the day you receive the hearing aid device. Getting used to your hearing aid may take some time and you may develop a few questions for your audiologist in your follow up visits. Here are the top 3 common questions asked in follow up visits for new hearing aids.

  1. Is it normal to feel discomfort from my new hearing aid? This is a very common question and it often means that you could benefit from some minor adjustments to your hearing aid. It will also take a few days to a few weeks to get used to the feeling of something in or around your ear.

  2. Is it normal for there to be whistling or feedback with my new hearing aid? This all depends on the type of hearing aid, the setting you were in when it happened, and the hearing aid settings. Many times, a few simple setting and or performance adjustments will cut out feedback noises. Just ask your audiologist to show you how to use the right settings for the noise level of any situation. It can be very helpful to keep a notebook and take notes on when you heard the feedback, what kind of noise it was, and what the sound environment was like when it happened. The more information you give the doctor, the better they can help fix the issue.

  3. Is is normal to still not hear well? The answer is no, your new hearing aid should be able to improve your hearing. Some sounds may sound a little bit different than if you did not have hearing loss, however you should still have improved hearing abilities.

All too often people don’t ask their audiologist questions and do not realize that they can have dramatically improved hearing experiences with their hearing aids just by changing a few settings. At Krista Szalc, Audiology, PLLC, we make sure that you feel comfortable to ask any and all questions so you enjoy your hearing aid and improved quality of life.
